Fondon't

I wanted to make Maddie a really cool cake for her birthday. I am not a baker generally, I don't really like baked goods (except bread) and Heather is way better at it anyhow. But Maddie wanted a cool Rapunzel...er...Tangled cake so I gave it a try. I learned all about fondant, which if you don't know is a god-awful blend of sugar, glycerin, and gelatin that tastes horrible but makes really smooth surfaces on cakes. You roll it out like dough and just place it on the cake. You can also paint it with food coloring.

This is the end result. Heather baked the two chocolate cakes and I did the "landscaping" and "architecture". It's a mixture of ice cream cones and paper towel rolls weighted down with beans, 5 pounds of fondant and lots of food coloring. Maddie had to provide the (slightly out-of-scale) Rapunzel. I forgot to use regular frosting as "glue", so it was really hard to get everything to stay put. The fondant on the tower kept falling down like a loose sock. A lesson in frustration. But now I know how to be a minor cake boss, sort of. Zach is already asking for a castle with working drawbridge for his birthday. Yikes!

It didn't taste very good. But Maddie loved it and that's all I care.
