I was all excited about the new "Lendle" service that allowed people to loan digital books to other people to read for a certain period of time. I was really well thought out - you couldn't read the book when it was loaned out, just like a real one, to better appease the publishers. The same model could be used for libraries to lend books out, just like they do with traditional books.
Unfortunately, Amazon and the publishers didn't like that idea and Amazon just blocked the Lendle API. They thought about lost sales and their greed took over. They want to make sure this is one good idea that does not make the transition from paper to digital.
According to Amazon, Lendle does not “serve the principal purpose of driving sales of products and services on the Amazon site.”
So another good idea goes down, killed by love of the ever-holy dollar. And with libraries being closed down across the country, I guess it won't be too long before the borrowing of books is gone forever, like full service gas stations.
