Double Entry
"An accountant is someone who knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing"
I have finally come to the realization that I can no longer delay learning some rudimentary accounting skills for my business.
I have to learn how to handle sales and returns, credit card transactions and bank transfers. I've got to charge sales tax and submit it to the state. And I have to keep immaculate records in case I find myself serving coffee to a grim-faced auditor in my home one day.
This is not fun for me. Figuring out how to legally handle my business money keeps me from actually going out and making money. But I can't afford to hire an accountant just yet.
Right now I can't tell the difference between a General Ledger and Heath Ledger, although I'm pretty sure they both expose you to something unpleasant, anally.
But I catch on fast, so I went out and bought "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Accounting". Turns out "The Incomplete Idiot's Guide to Accounting" was sold out.
I hope this works.
If not, please send me a file-filled cake. I'll be in block 4, cell #325, lower bunk, snuggling with Bubba.

You should hit up my dad!
You've already studied accounting. It's called thermodynamics. Let an accountant keep track of entropy.
Get Quickbooks. I hear it's great!
Right, QuickBooks is it Dave, but not the Pro version, you are still an amateur if not a "complete idiot". But your CFO brother can probably show you all you need to know on an Excel Spreadsheet that would work pretty good. Quickbooks does have an option for credit card sales merchant status and is great for payroll once you have employees.

Actually I do have Quickbooks for Mac 2009, and it is cool. Already set it up. But I also need to be able to know what I am doing so I can explain it to the auditor in my house.
Dave, I have had my own business for ten years. Successfully. Hire an accountant. You can blame all on them. Now a days mine comes to my home and my refund is in my bank in three business days Life is so cool. Plus the first five years is a write off , that is if your accountant is not religious.

If I hire an accountant at this point, I'll have to close my proverbial doors, I don't make enough money yet.
Dave the Great Dali Lama once said. Bite off more than you can chew...and then just chew it.
Good Luck

Quickbooks Dave -- does it all and is easy to learn and do all the financial reporting -- I would send you mine to download but that would be (I thinK) illegal?
