Culture Clash

A very haggard-looking man walked in to the polling station in Troy yesterday morning as I waited in line to vote. He was dressed in flannel, with a day-glo orange hunting hat and long unkempt beard. He was carrying a bible.

He walked right up to the black man in front of me, the only one in line, and shoved the bible in his face. He accompanied this with a toothy sneer. Then he walked to the end of the line.

I guess it's a little open to interpretation as to what this guy was trying to say, but whatever it was, I don't think he was being friendly. It really unnerved and slightly intimidated the guy in front of me.

This display began to anger me. After I voted, I walked past the haggard guy, looked him in the eye and said "Freak", and walked out.

I felt better.

I think what the bible freak was doing would be considered intimidation, but it's much more rewarding to take matters in your own hands then tattle tale on him to the poll volunteers. Good for you!

What bearded guy did was technically illegal but I'm certain black man didn't change his vote because of the encounter. Ironically, the exit polls say Prop 8 in Calif.(about banning gay marriage) passed because the black vote supported the ban due to religious beliefs.

Organized religion, doing what it does best, limiting the rights of other people.
