Last Call
Another crazy thing we used to do with the common telephone was to make "Phonies".
"Phonie" was the 70's term for prank phone calls. We would say all kinds of crazy things, play music, ask for strange people, and generally confuse and bewilder people of all ages and classes.
We used to record them too, with an old cassette recorder and phone tap. Once I had a friend over for a sleepover and we had a blast making random crank calls far into the night. I don't think we ever slept.
I forgot all about it until about a month later when I overheard my father talking to my mother upstairs:
"Ninety-nine phone calls AFTER midnight? Who the hell made ninety-nine TOLL calls AFTER midnight on October 8th?"

We used to do this too! We ordered pizza for people, make silly threats to people we didn't even know. We once even went on a calling spree calling innocent people across the world. It's really a shame that with caller ID, this generation won't be able have the same fun we did!
Shhhh, they're on to you. Did your friend end up in therapy? Which side of the couch?
Hello, is your refrigerator running?
Yes?
Then you'd better go catch it!
Hello, is your roof leaking?
No?
Then how'd a big drip like you get in?
Bet you'd never heard THOSE before, huh?
Didn't you ever call a bar and ask the poor barmaid to call out and see if Mike Hunt was there?
We would call boys we liked and just listen to them say "hello." That was the highlight of our evening. Caller ID messed up all the fun.
Yeah Lin I wondered where those calls to Egypt and Ireland came from...
