We've decided to plant a tree in our new yard, sometime next spring. Something we can watch grow and comment about how we planted it when it was only "this" tall.
I was thinking perhaps an "Autumn Radiance" or "Firedance" Maple (when did people start trade marking plant hybrids? It was probably that darned Rudolph Boysen and his accursed berry).
What do you think, any suggestions? What's your favorite tree? Of course, it has to be something that can survive here, don't tell me to plant an olive tree...I'd love to, but I really don't want to move my tree indoors every winter.

My favorite tree is Sugar Maple. Oh, wait, I meant to say I'm INUNDATED with Sugar Maples. Come get a seedling or two or two million.
I've given ornamental flowering trees to people as gifts, so I've done a little research and the ones I've given or wanted to are: Weeping Cherry, Crabapple or Weeping Crabapple, Golden Chain, Eastern Redbud (lavendar blossoms), and Japanese Maple. Some Magnolias and Dogwoods will grow in your climate, too. More suggestions than you bargained for? Be careful what you ask for.... :)
No, I love it, thanks. There are ten trees that are prohibited in Troy, here they are...
1) Acer Disycarpum (Silver Maple)
2) Acer Negundo (Box Elder)
3) Ailanthus Altissima (Tree of Heaven)
4) Berberis Vulgaris (European Barberry)
5) Catalpa Speciosa (Northern Catalpa)
6) Juniperus Virginana (Eastern Red Cedar)
7) Populus (Poplar)
8) Salix (Willow)
9) Ulmus Americanana (American Elm)
10) Ulmus Parviflora (Chinese Elm)
