Hammer Of The Gods

I did another time-honored fatherly duty yesterday and introduced Zach to Led Zeppelin. Anyone who grew up in the 70's knows that the 60's really happened in the 70's, and Led Zeppelin is the epitome of great 70's rock & roll. We watched some of Led Zep's 1973 movie "The Song Remains The Same", which was recorded live at Madison Square Garden. It's a great delve into a 70's concert, complete with Über-stoned crowds and very little in the way of theatrical lighting and lasers.

Zach loved the guitar playing of Jimmy Page, who was pretty much at the top of his game in 1973. His awesome blues-infested riffs and pentatonic minor soloing should be required listening for any guitar player. He absolutely smoked his way through classics like Stairway to Heaven and Black Dog, his 1959 Les Paul slung impossibly low. It was quite a sight.

I told Z the whole story about the death of John Bonham and how his son is now a drummer. Zach noticed the drumming and said he really liked it. John Bonham was known for his ability to drop beats in amazing and interesting ways.

And I also told him about Robert Plant and how he has had a successful solo career and is still going strong. And I mentioned that the remainder of Led Zep is getting back together for a reunion and I'd love to go see them. Z listened intently to everything I said as I waxed poetic about the good old days when rock & roll was connected to old blues, had real energy and was not influenced by record companies or focus groups or political correctness. At length he looked at me and spoke:

His name is Rubber Plant?

Loved the post, but the ending reminded me of a sitcom moment about 30 yrs ago when the dad spent the better part of an evening carefully explaining the birds and the bees to his young son. When dad finally asked, "Any questions, son?", he got the response:

"Did you know you have little hairs up your nose?"
