Purging Evil Spirits...And Worse

I gave the dogs baths yesterday, because they were appallingly dirty. Having rolled in or dug through about every nasty substance in the yard over a period of many hot days, they needed to be purged of their evil spirits.

Coco was first, and she made the tub look like the site of a great battle between a black bear with mange and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Her fur must have held a pound of dirt. At least, I hope it was dirt. After washing her as thoroughly as I could, the towel still looked like an old rag from Jiffy Lube.

Jake was pretty bad too. He is black and white and as his fur gets dirty it lowers his overall contrast. When he is suddenly cleaned, his blacks are blacker and his whites are whiter, and his overall contrast returns to its vibrant normal state. He shines after a bath.

Have you ever wondered if dogs like being clean? My guess is that they don't. They seem to be in a state of stress after a bath, as if they are thinking "What the hell happened to my smell?!?!?". They sniff themselves all over for their favorite scents, in vain. They can't wait to get back outside and do some serious rolling in dirt, dead things, and worse. Only then do they feel normal again.
