Upgraded Eye

“The best camera is the one you have with you”

Apple posted a bunch of un-retouched photos from the new iPhone camera, and they are equal to most point-and-shoot cameras on the market. It’s a very impressive new camera:

-          8 MP, with a backplane lit CMOS sensor
-          f/2.4, which is huge for a small camera, and allows shallow DOF shots previously only possible on a DSLR.
-          Custom Apple Image Signal Processor (ISP) allows for very fast photos, about one second for first one and 0.5 seconds for the next one. That’s 2-3 times faster than other smartphones like the Droid Bionic.
-          Five lens system which really bumps up clarity and lowers distortion.
-          Hybrid IR filter, something you only see on DSLRs, filteres out IR which can cause noise and ghosting in shots with bright lighting.

I took a critical look at the photos and they are not near the level of a DSLR, but they do beat many of the point-and-shoot cameras out there for color fidelity, shadow detail, and lack of noise. Remember, these photos are unretouched.

This camera also shoots 1080p video with image stabilization. And all photos and video you take are automagically synced to the cloud and down to all your other devices, including your home computer.

I am going to start taking lots more pictures.

This feature alone may be the tipping point for me. Our point and shoot is nearing the end of the road. If I can buy and keep track of one less thing, that's worth a lot.
