"According to a survey commissioned by SanDisk, family photos are the first thing people would save in a house fire, after relatives and pets."

Please, please tell me you back up your files.
There are two phases to the life cycle of any hard drive: "about to fail", and "failed".
If you have a Mac, get an external drive, plug it in and turn Time Machine on. You'll be automatically backed up every hour.
If you have a PC, I'm sure there are automatic backup programs you can buy. The important thing is to get something automatic. If you have to remember, you'll never do it.
If possible, get two hard drives and alternate them, and keep the second one off-site. Or use a trustworthy online backup service.
You'll have more time to save Fido in the event of a fire.
