Legend

Robert Johnson garnered little recognition in his own time, owing to the
fact that he was itinerant and played mostly on street corners and in
juke joints.

It is our incredible good fortune that he recorded 29 songs in 1936 and
1937, along with the alternates they are the only music we have of his.
There are only two verified photographs of him, one he took of himself
in a photo booth. Details of his life are very scarce. As Martin
Scorsese has said: "The thing about Robert Johnson was that he only
existed on his records. He was pure legend."

What we know for sure is that his life was short, and that he was a
master of blues guitar in the highest order. Today he is considered to
be one of the all-time great guitarists, of any age. His style was
highly complex and extremely advanced. When Rolling Stone guitarist
Keith Richards was introduced to Johnson's music by Brian Jones, he
replied, "Who is the other guy playing with him?". There wasn't another
guy playing with him of course, but it took quite a while for Richards
to believe that Johnson was producing these multi-layered sounds alone.
Groups such as Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton, The White Stripes, and
thousands of others owe their existence to this elusive man who, legend
has it, sold his soul to the devil in exchange for guitar talent the
world had never seen.

Johnson's music has lived on to inform and propel generations of popular
music. It is safe to say the landscape of music today would be very,
very different if Robert had not given us those 29 songs. You can now
buy all 29 songs (plus all the alternate takes, which add dimension to
the collection since Robert never played a song the same way twice)
together and I highly recommend it.
