We sense the world through our limited, and highly imperfect senses. Here's a great illustration. In the picture above, the green stripe and the blue stripe...are the same color.
If you don't believe me, bring it in to Photoshop and sample them. Yep, both the same.
Everything in our visual system is relative. Surroundings influence our perception of color dramatically as you can see above.
