Sleeping Bear Dunes

"It is peaceful and serene, a place for gazing out into the world, night or day, and realizing that the universe is truly a magical, majestic mystery, and humans are just a very small part of it all,"

CBS Good Morning America just concluded a poll to find the most beautiful place in America, and that place is Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan!

We were just there two years ago during reunion and I had hadn't been there in many years prior - I had forgotten how amazing it is there. I always think of our trips there when I was young - the big dune of course, but the azure water at the shore is something I hadn't recalled - it's stunning - suddenly it's like you're looking at the Mediterranean Sea. Real sand dunes of any size are very rare in America. There's one near Yuma AZ, which is often used for filming movies where a sandy desert scene is needed. But Sleeping Bear is the best of them. And it's near water.

"Tens of thousands of viewers voted online for this Michigan park, which is one of the nation's best-kept secrets. The hidden gem boasts 64 miles of beaches along Lake Michigan, two islands, 26 inland lakes, more than 50,000 acres of land, and the monumental sand dunes from which it gets its name."

These were the 10 finalists:

Sleeping Bear Dunes, MI
Newport, RI
Cape Cod, MA
Point Reyes, CA
Aspen, CO
Sedona, AZ
Destin, FL
Asheville, NC
Lanikai Beach, HI
Grand Teton National Park, WY
