"Michigan law requires that public schools provide the basic materials and supplies that students need for school. While we will continue to supply the basics that every child needs to fully participate as a student, teachers may be asking you to voluntarily supply certain items they feel would enhance their students’ learning. To the degree that you are able to send those materials with your child, that will be appreciated. Please know, however, no child will be penalized if he/she is not able to do this."
Schools do not provide enough materials for education so the teachers often have to buy them with money out of their own pockets. If the parents help, all the better.
Reminds me of something I saw once on a shirt or bumper sticker:
"It will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the air force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber."

We spend appalling amounts of money on devices of war, but the schools don't have enough crayons.
Something isn't right here.
