Highest Bidder

"Los Angeles-based Splendent Media has just signed a deal to represent the rights to 69 Kurosawa projects".

The rights to almost all of Kurosawa's incredible works are now on the market for the highest bidder to acquire and remake.

Expect to see a flotilla of really bad interpretations of Kurosawa's films, very soon.

Kurosawa was a master storyteller, and his themes have universal appeal. But really. C'mon. There should be a rule in Hollywood that nobody is allowed to remake a film that was made perfectly the first time.

Remember what happened with Psycho? What good could possibly come of a reinterpretation of a film that needed none? Don't ask me why, morbid curiosity perhaps, but I actually went to see the shot-for-shot remake of Psycho in the theater. It was the only movie in my life I ever walked out of. I felt dirty, like I needed a shower....uh, never mind.

Shortly after Seven Samurai was made, the film was remade in the US as a western called The Magnificent Seven. Although that movie has a pretty good fan base, that's only because they've never seen the original. There is no comparison.

Seven Samurai is being remade again in the US, this time with the original name. I shudder to think of how bad it will be. I've heard Rashômon and Ikiru are next. Three of my favorite films. Butchered.
