The destruction in Japan is very very bad, ten thousand or more dead and trillions of dollars in damage. But I think it could have been much worse. If Japan was not the world's greatest preparer (So alert were the Japanese emergency services that they set off the evacuation alarms BEFORE the earthquake), if they weren't so good at emergency procedures and evacuations, I have no doubt this would have been 100,000 dead like Sumatra in 2004.

The figures aren't in yet. However, point taken. I am impressed at their quake resistant architecture technology!
