Race in the D
This is very sad to me. Look at the segregation of Detroit. Red dots are units of Caucasian population, blue are African-American, and orange are Latino.
Most major cities are segregated like this, a result of some combination of economics of the poor, white-flight, and solidarity. But in Detroit the boundaries are much more sharply drawn. Eight-Mile Road for
instance, is almost like a big fence.
The mixing areas are small, Southfield mostly. And the Latinos are all in one area, the wonderful but isolated old section of town near the Ambassador Bridge in Southwest Detroit.
This is all very disturbing to me. I know if I had it my way, this map would be purple. But I don't have much my way, and this is the sad reality.
We have a long ways to go.
