93% Baby!

Among my several backup strategies, Time Machine, a big Drobo RAID array, and other various duplicates, I also use CrashPlan. It's an online backup that safely stores copies of all your files up in "the cloud". It's very cheap, considering how valuable my files are to me - $45 a year for unlimited storage. And it's been great so far, I had to access several files I lost and they were right there waiting for me.

The biggest issue with using CrashPlan has been the sheer volume of my files. When you are uploading files to an online backup system and you have terabytes of data, that initial backup can take forever. Or, a couple years more accurately. I am 93% complete with my main backup. That means that 93% of my files are up there. And it seems to be pretty good at choosing which files to prioritize, as it puts all my new photos up immediately. It also knows not to back up huge useless files like applications (which you can easily re-download) and system paging files, stuff of that type that can be recreated easily. And when you delete a file on your computer, that file is still kept on the CrashPlan servers. Just in case you ever want it back.

So I'm 100% backed up at home, and 93% online. I'm getting there. I think I'll have a party when I'm @ 100%. Maybe I'll call it my:

Oh so clever. I still have Mozy for under $40 per year.
