Ever since we moved in to our new house we've noticed that we get a large number of big jets flying directly overhead. They don't bother us, they're still pretty high up, but we get one every couple of minutes. My theory early on was that we are in an approach path for Metro Airport. While researching rockets, I found the official sky charts for our airspace and guess what? I was right!
Four of the six runways at Metro are perfectly aligned with our house. I found the recommended glide paths and they show the planes would be about 8,000-10,000 feet up as they pass overhead if they are landing.
Mystery: solved.
