Fishing for Answers

Zach has a great neurologist and he had an appointment with her this week to checkup on his progress and address any issues he might be having. His epilepsy is pretty much gone now, he hasn't had a seizure in over two years.

His doctor is a big proponent of Omega-3, especially for upping concentration in school (he's actually doing very well in school, despite being a young boy with no ability to sit silently for more than 30 seconds in a row, but he does have some issues with attention span). Miss Neuro said O-3 would probably help him. She said Omega-3 is the only dietary substance proven to increase memory and concentration in actual scientific tests. So, there we have it.

Basically, it's fish-oil. I remember back in my parents' day they used to call fish "brain food" and I guess they were right. I wish we could afford to eat more fish (can anyone? have you seen how much any fish other than farm-raised salmon costs? It's crazy). But the next best thing is to get him some tablets of fish oil, which I did today. Basically it comes in two forms, one is a gel capsule and the other is a sugary gummy bear for children. Yeah, a fish-flavored gummy bear...mmmm. Zach has no problem swallowing pills so I got the capsules (the one that helpfully bears a label that says "No fish burps!"), but when I got them open I realized that they are huge - more than large enough to gag a Cape Buffalo. They're like gel footballs, very intimidating.

So not sure what to do now. Perhaps they make a children's dose in a smaller gelcap? If not, it's gummy bear hell.

I quit fish oil because of fish burps. I thought I had a bad batch. I wonder how they get the fish taste out of fish oil......

We all take fish oil daily. I take the horse pills. For the girls, Nordic Naturals makes a kids' fish oil in little tiny balls that can be swallowed whole or chewed (and they're supposedly strawberry flavored.) But they're expensive and Zach would probably need to take some crazy number of them to get enough. You could always go the cod liver oil route. Nasty taste, but more economical.

Mary, re fish burps, you can get fish oil in special capsules that don't break down until they reach your intestines (as opposed to you stomach, resulting in fish burps.) The fish oils I take are lemon flavored making the fish burps a little less offensive.

I take the gummies from Costco but the concentration is kind of low. Try krill oil..they are smaller, I have some u can try.
