Books? What's That?

Another sad day for America. But also a disturbing trend that kinda worries me even more than whether or not masturbation will remain legal (don't worry it will, Christine O'Donnell went down).
We live in the age of the death of the library. In communities all over the country cities are choosing to close libraries rather than fund them. I guess Steve Jobs was right: nobody reads anymore. And as for studying, coffee shops have stepped in and taken over that business. As is typical in America these days, down with learning, up with coffee cake!
Our city of Troy had three measures on the ballot to fund the libraries which went down yesterday, and so did West Bloomfield. Two cities that will no longer have libraries. I guess the book publishing lobby must be a strong one, and they'd much rather sell you that copy of Steven King's latest thriller rather than have you borrow it for free.
As with so much of yesterday's election, this was partly a reaction to the state our country is in. Our previous president screwed our economy so badly over his eight long years that it's the current prez and congress that's getting the blame. And Obama is very reticent to brag about all he's accomplished, which is a great deal indeed. I sometimes wish he was more of a marketer. It's almost like he's scared of looking like Bush if he were to brag a little. But where Bush was all wind and mispronounced words, Obama has actually done stuff. You know, for the people, not just for Halliburton's execs. There are those who have taken to pointing that out finally:

One question always hangs in my mind when I think of these bigoted so-called religious people who seem bent on taking away our freedoms...do they actually read these bibles they swing around? Because if they did they would see that this fella called Jesus, who is mentioned a few times in that book, is just about the biggest liberal this world has ever seen. How do they rectify that in their minds?
Let's see:
Jesus = anti war, pro poor people, anti rich people, turn the other cheek, hang out with the lowest classes of society and call them equal, love, peace, giving all you have, etc.
Which party does that sound like? Not the Tea Party, I can tell you that.
Sounds more like John Lennon to me.
Well, if there is a sliver lining it's that these Tea Party freaks are about to find out what happens when they get thrust into a situation beyond their abilities. Which, as I gather by listening to them talk, is pretty much any situation.
Probably the best moment of yesterday (other than reading Mitch Perliss's witty posts) was watching that stiff eBay chick in Cali who spent a quarter of a billion of her own dollars running for governor go down in flames. That was truly chuckle-worthy.
Maybe there is hope. I'm cheered up! Thanks.

It's the lack of "fact checks" and "debunking" that really gets to me. I suppose the lies and exaggerations in their propaganda would be more difficult to spread if there was accountability in the "news". I think there's really nothing more important than the TRUTH.
