The Day It Started
Seventy years ago today, the German army rolled across the borders of Poland. September 1st, 1939 was the day the Second World War started.
Five German armies under the command of General Walther von Brauchitsch brutalized the unprepared and overwhelmed forces of Poland, who were outdated, outmaneuvered, and really only set up to refight the trench battles of WWI.
Massive air strikes combined with overwhelming Panzer tank units and motorized infantry made use of a revolutionary new "Blitzkrieg" (Lightning War) style of fighting. The world had never seen warfare done like that before.
The German armies easily destroyed the Polish cavalry and infantry units. Poland surrendered two weeks later, badly beaten, but the German military machine was just getting started.
Wow. 70 years ago, right now.
