Ok, I'll Bite
Since Cat vs. Dog fever seems to have spread like wildfire through the blogosphere, I must add my 1/50 of a dollar.
I have never owned a cat, if indeed you can "own" a cat, or any other animal, so I have no first hand experience. I do have dogs though and I can tell you what I like about them.
This will be a pro-dog, cat-neutral post.
Dogs are pack animals, and are therefore social in the deepest sense of the word. They are not aloof at all. They really want you to like them, and they need affection and attention to thrive.
In return, dogs are fiercely loyal. A dog would not have a second thought about diving into danger to help his "pack". I know this from personal experience, Jake once ripped across a yard to attack a pit bull that was coming for me. He wasn't thinking about himself, he was giving his all for me, even if it meant his life.
Dogs have wonderful, expressive personalities that come from their need to socialize. They have to interact with members of their pack to survive. Cooperation is not optional, it is required to survive. After a few years of being with a dog, you can read each others minds.
I often write about our dogs on these electronic pages, I would love to hear some of your stories.

Have had both as part of the family at different times in my life. Adore them both equally but for different reasons. Cats are more "independent" in terms of being quite happy alone. They do love their peeps just the same though. Often longing to be on your lap or sleeping by you.
Dogs are more demonstrative for sure and one becomes very attached in response to their loyalty and adoration. For me cats are easier but I'd give anything to be able to commit to a dog....just once more.
Hey, that's my cat in your picture!! I was going to write a response to your post but Mary said exactly what I was going to say. No kidding. Cats really are very social, even in the wild, but they're too smart to "obey" like dogs. Dogs are great, I've had a couple, but they tie you down and I'm gone too much to be fair to the dog.
I must be a pack animal.
My view is that people who have dogs are fearful of their alone time and their humans need the attention. Cat owners just enjoy the presents of an animal in their life. Not constant attention. My favorite dog is the English Bull (don't have one) and my cat is a Russian Blue. I call her Rusha. Yes I am a vegitarian. JAG.
Cats are not smarter than dogs, they are just adapted to different social structures. Dogs only "obey" because they see the human as the alpha of the pack and obeying brings rewards to them.
You could just as easily says cats are too dumb to obey, they don't realize the advantages of it.
I totally agree with you. Bebe and I read each others minds. That was strange you said that. I never thought about it before. It's very true.
Dogs rock! I remember when I was pregnant with Ben and Jay was working afternoons in the emergency psych unit. I wouldn't have made it thru this time if it wasn't for Maxi. She kept me company and kept me safe. No one was going to come near her mommy.
She also managed to unlock the door several times when we got locked out.
