This pic is from the good old days of her time working at the Star Bakery at 9 & Coolidge, next to Dexter Davison. Jay and I used to go in there and Alisa would give us free cookies when that lady in the background of the picture wasn't looking. Really yummy soft crumbly cookies with colorful sprinkles on top. I'm sure they have a name.
Happy Birthday, and thanks for the cookies! :)

You must have been so bedazzled by the cookies that you did not realize that it was on the corner of 10 mile and Coolidge not 9. I wonder if we can send Alisa a box for her Birthday or if she has the secret recipe for them.
THANK YOU!!! How nice of you to think of me!
I love my birthday having a place on Dave's famous blog - now I might be famous too!
Those cookies sure were good, weren't they? They were crumbly, but that may be because they were really old and whatever it was that held them together had just disintegrated. But I digress.
It was actually Mertz Bakery, and there were two locations, one on 9 and Coolidge and one on 10 and Coolidge. I worked 90% of the time at the 10 Mile one attached to Dexter Davison (Where Old Friends Meet to Shop and Save!). Once I pulled a loaf of "bread" off the "day old" shelf and showed my boss's sister, a nasty old woman who didn't seem to harbor an iota of affection for me. The "bread" was green and had a wig of fuzzy hair growing out of it. I told her I was going to throw it away and she yelled at me to put it back. "Someone will buy it!" she spat.
Oh, the good old days!
Ok, so I only got the location and name of the place wrong. At least I was right about the cookies being crumbly. :)
Was she really so mean? I remember the place well. I'd go in with my family Friday evenings to get a challah and Sunday mornings for treats. The women working their were always nice. I always gave me a crumbly cookie.
