Zachary Has Left The Building

Today is Zach's last day of 3rd grade. It's been a long school year, full of great experiences. His teacher Ms. McDermid worked with him and encouraged him to become better and better and he has certainly shined.

A different Zachary will walk out of school today than the one who walked in last October. He's put on some inches, gotten faster and leaner, and learned about everything from math to spelling, "cursive" writing to crayfish biology.

His class had a pretend town called "City of Awesome Learning", or C.O.A.L., where they earned pretend money and had pretend jobs (he was, among other things, a postman). But the interactions were real.

Zach experienced a girl's attention for the first time, as a cute little classmate named Bethany pined away for him.

The class also had a pet, a big fluffy guinea pig named Marshmallow. I'm not sure what Marshmallow contributed to the class, as he (she?) gazed out of his (her?) cage in half-terrified wonder at the proceedings, but the thing sure was cute.

I volunteered at several functions this year, you can read about my impressions on these very pages. But what I saw was my little guy, talking and laughing and learning with other little people. A part of the future of our civilization was right there in that class, figuring out how it all works.

Congratulations, Zach, and look out 4th grade!!!
