Falling Through The Cracks
Here's a good lesson for all of you with young children. My friend Jay was about to throw out an old couch. Just on a whim he decided to cut the bottom open to check if anything had fallen down there over the years. Maybe some coins, or a few pens?
Yeah...how about:
Eight Nintendo DS and GameBoy games
A necklace (the valuable kind)
Three action figures
A handful of trading cards
Five steel marbles from a basketball game
TV remote control (so THAT'S where it went!)
Enough cash to open a modest numbered account in the Cayman Islands
Assorted processed food items, beyond salvage
In short, the stuff inside the couch was worth more than the couch was.
Note: there were no edible panties or handcuffs or empty whipped cream cans, because this is a family-friendly lesson.
Lesson learned: if you've got kids between the ages of two and...say eighty-two, check your old furniture out before disposing of it. In fact, in my experience you should also check your garbage to make sure your two year old hasn't thrown out a camera or your checkbook.
